Brightkite, Where Are You?

Brightkite, Where Are You?

Posted on 23. Oct, 2008 by Rob in All, Life, Older, Review

I recently became aware of a service called Brightkite.  It seems to be relatively similar to Loopt but the interface and mobile options are better planned out.  The other bonus I found was that Verizon is not charging to use it, yet.

For those not familiar with Brightkite (and Loopt), they provide location aware community services that let you interact with others, offer your current location and search for others within your area.  This service seems to be geared towards larger urban areas as I have yet to find more than 1 person in the entire Salem, OR area actually using the service.  The lack of participating members in my area may also be due to the fact that it is an invite only service so far and not known to many.

I for one am intrigued by these new location aware apps as a means to better connect with others in your area.  Brightkite allows members to set their privacy levels so you can choose who can see your information.  Integration with other services like Twitter make it a great choice as well to keep those around you up to date.  I plan on continuing to use Brightkite in hopes that others will start to pick up on it.  Salem is lacking a cohesive community (especially downtown) and sites like Brightkite could be a great tool in fixing that.

If you would like an invite (I have 3 I can give out) please leave a comment!  You can find me at http://brightkite.com/people/coffeedaze.  Please feel free to add me as a friend on there.  If you like in Salem, OR all the better!

I’m intrigued by these apps. Between Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and so many others out there where we publish out personal information, it seems like we would want to keep something (read “something” with emphasis) private to some degree–like our exact location. I do understand that you can limit posting your current location to whenever you want, but still….Maybe I’m just paranoid? Either way, with all these forms of communication these days, I wonder if we’re approaching 2 or 3 degrees of separation yet?!

The great thing about Brightkite is the ability to choose where you update it. I think it’s a good idea not to update it at home. If you’re at an event though it’s a great way to let others know where it is by easily updating your location with a quick note about the place.

I’ve been using Brighkite for about 5 months now, and was a bit leary of using it to update my whereabouts at first. Then I realized, I don’t have to put my exact home address; I just used the city, state and zip. So, like you, I only updated the details if I am out at an event or at a store, coffeeshop or something.
