Yeah, I’ll Admit It

Yeah, I’ll Admit It

I am a lover of top 5 lists. I could easily use a Hi Fidelity reference here but instead I’ll just say it appeals both to my love of marketing and my anal-retentive side. In past blogs I have attempted to come up with top 5 lists of music film and others with little luck. I find my tastes are often too broad to compact into a list. In a pursuit of ever-widening content on here though I want to make another attempt to put together a few lists. Today I will start with my top 5 movies I love but am often embarrassed to admit. So without further ado, here it is:

My Top 5 List of Films I love But am Often Embarrassed to Admit

(not necessarily my top 5 movies of all time though)

1) Forest Gump (1994)

It’s a combination of Tom Hanks and a focus on the 60’s and 70’s (two decades I am intrigued with) that puts this in my favorites. The story is simple and the acting by many characters, basic. I have loved this movie since pre-release advertising. There are few films I can watch repeatedly and still get that same sense of wonder every time, but this is one of them. The embarrassment factor is obvious. This movie sparked a hundred jokes and pop-culture references. It quickly lost appeal with critics and fans. I still love it and watch it whenever I can.

2) What Dreams May Come (1998)

Robin Williams has played countless zany and often annoying characters throughout his career. His latest films in which he tries to play a darker role are less than palatable. What Dreams May Come was under the radar for most people when it came out. It’s one of those films that most people don’t see until they are told about it by someone else. The story line is dark and foreboding and the visual effects and ideas amazing. I highly recommend this film for anyone looking to see Robin Williams actually act without making you want to stab yourself.

3) Life As A House (2001)

Kevin Kline is in top form in this underrated film about a man dying of cancer looking to connect with his son. Hayden Christensen is horrible as usual but it doesn’t ruin the film in any way. It’s hard to explain the pull of this movie for me but I find it a powerful experience every time I see it.

4) Jurassic Park (1993)

I can’t say this movie is profound or the acting intense. I can’t say this movie is revolutionary in any way. Jurassic Park is every little boy’s dream come true. When viewing it for the first time all I had to say was, “HOLY S**T, THERE’S REAL DINOSAURS!”. Seeing it years later the special effects have faded a bit but the wonderment is still there. I pray for advancements in ancient DNA cloning.

5) Love Actually (2003)

With a an amazing cast, fun twisting story and great music this movie is one of my favorites (yeah, it’s a definite chick flick). I don’t know what to say except go rent it, see it, and love it.
