Mobile Decisions

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!  My wife and son went out the other day and got me some gifts for this occasion.  My son (2 years old) picked out the gifts and they were interesting, to say the least.  He wanted to get me a new phone so I am now the proud owner of a lovely toy Blackberry with sound effects and all.  He also got me candy (couldn’t be wanting some himself) and a toy spider (which he has been carrying around for a few days).  The gifts were great and it’s always fun to see him light up with pride at how good he did for “Papa’s Day”.

My wife also got me a card letting me know she was going to be getting me a new phone (a real one) to replace my EnV.  I have been researching the various options Verizon has to offer and have decided, since I love my EnV so much, to get the EnV2.  There are a few more expensive phones out there such as the Voyager and the Glyde but the reviews on the touch screens and Verizon’s habit of charging a lot for data plans makes them less than desirable.  I am incredibly hard on my phones.  I have never had one last the full two years.  The PocketPC phones are nice but not often built with toddlers in mind and have severe data prices strapped to them.

The Env2 is the successor, obviously, to the EnV and V phones that were such a success with Verizon.  They are packed to the brim with features and have an interesting form factor.  I have never owned a more durable phone as well.  With the EnV2 they went with the success of the EnV and slimmed it down, fixed a few options, and added better music capabilities such as 8GB memory support and dedicated music controls.  The inner screen is quite a bit larger and the buttons have a more tactile feel to them.

I know the thing to get these days is the iPhone but I use my phones.  My phones are kept in my pocket, grabbed by toddlers, dropped on occasion and used to the extreme.  The iPhone is expensive (yes, $199 + $240 extra in bills is expensive) and is one of the least durable phones I have seen.  The fact that it is also tied to AT&T (one of the worst carriers I have seen) also makes it useless to me.

The EnV2 is an incredible phone with a great service.  Now if I can just figure out how to keep this one alive for 2 years I’ll be set.
