Debating Ink

I have been wanting to get more ink for quite a while. I think the time has come to act on that desire. There are two basic designs I have been considering for quite a while. One is of the traditional sailor swallows on either side of my neck. I traveled for so long and now that I have a family to always return to this tattoo is very fitting. I also want to incorporate my kids’ birth dates into the design. These are two designs I have been working with with the swallows in mind. (click on image for larger size)
The other design I have considered is a Dharma wheel on the back of my neck. I worked with hundreds of different designs but found them either too complicated or lacking in symbolism. The design I decided worked best was the following: (again, click for larger size)
I have to say I am leaning heavily towards the swallows as I have wanted them longer. I’m not final on any design though and was curious if any readers had any thoughts.

I always like the Celtic cross ..
You thought about using a picture of your kids? I seen a guy on TV (LA Ink) did something similar, it looked beautiful.. Plus you have some great shots.

Photo tatts are risky. They can turn out great or look god-awful (and permanent), plus they are very expensive. There is really only a few guys I would let do a photo tatt on me and they are both 3000+ miles away so the cost would be astronomical.
The swallow tatts have a lot of meaning for me so they are almost a given (at some point) and I thought adding my kids’ birth dates would make them even better. I have considered getting my kids infant footprints (we have good photos of them) at some point as well. It’s much easier for an ink artist to do and costs a lot less. It also looks cool as hell.
Here’s an example… http://www.flickr.com/photos/megabee/554681928/

I like the looks of the Swallows with the banner, and there symbolism. I’m tempted to get the baby foot print tats on my back for each kid. Especially since they walk all over me anyways :P

How bout turning a photo into a line-art kinda thing in PhotoShop or Illustrator first? I’m not into ink that much unless it’s applied to paper, but that might be an option wouldn’t it?
